Tree of Life: Evolutionary Diagram

An information design piece mapping the key milestones of human evolution into a radial timeline. Radiating outward from the Big Bang to modern society, the composition uses scale, orientation, and spatial rhythm to guide the viewer through dense chronological data. The concentric structure mirrors organic growth rings, allowing macro-level visual interest to coexist with micro-level readability.

Service Design & Regulatory Information Architecture

USPS Domestic Mail Manual System

A systemic information architecture and service design overhaul of the United States Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) and customer mailing guides. Grounded in user research, the project resolved critical friction between complex postal regulations and real-world mail preparation that drove excessive reliance on postal staff. The resulting framework restructured dense federal policy into modular, task-based documentation featuring standardized numbering, a robust typographic hierarchy, and intuitive reference structures.

Completed as a collaborative graduate research project at Carnegie Mellon University in partnership with the USPS. My role encompassed research synthesis, design of the core grid and typographic systems, iconography, and the final spread prototype.

Service Design Strategy & Stakeholder Ecosystems

Cooperative Preschool Service Ecosystem

An end-to-end service design and organizational transition strategy guiding a cooperative preschool through facility relocation and capacity expansion. Through ecosystem mapping and participatory spatial planning, the project aligned key stakeholder requirements, including board governance, licensing, financing, teacher workflows, and daily parent co-op labor.

Bridging physical site planning with service blueprints, the project resulted in a resilient, community-centered operational framework that ensured continuity of care, improved educational outcomes, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability.

Systems Design & UX Architecture

Console UI & Navigation Architecture

User interface and navigation systems designed for major console titles at Treyarch (Sega Sports / Activision). Structured dense sports data, including interactive playoff bracket trees, player rosters, and live statistical tracking, into intuitive, controller-mapped menu hierarchies. Also created custom 3D assets and texture maps, including the hero Stanley Cup model featured in the championship flow. The broadcast-inspired UI was designed for rapid controller navigation, focusing on reducing visual noise and cognitive load to ensure complex playoff structures and player stats remain crisp and legible across standard displays.

Motion Design & Kinetic Typography

Rhythm, Cadence & Meaning

An exploration of how typographic form and motion design combine to interpret spoken dialogue. Distinct typeface pairings establish character identities, while dynamic transitions, scale shifts, and rhythmic pacing deliver the emotional arc of the scene. The project highlights how methods in temporal design such as manipulating speed, entry, and pause can give typography a distinct voice and weight.

Interactive Media & Editorial Study

Sarah Midda: South of France

A sensory-rich interactive digital adaptation of Sara Midda’s illustrated sketchbook that reimagines traditional print as a dynamic multimedia experience. Built around an intuitive calendar navigation model, the interface pairs fluid page transitions and subtle typographic reveals with ambient audio cues. The project explores how to structure non-linear editorial navigation while honoring the tactile charm of traditional watercolor illustration and the intimacy of physical print.

Higher-Ed Information Architecture & UX Analysis

Carnegie Mellon Online Course Schedule

A user research and service design analysis evaluating how students navigate Carnegie Mellon University’s online course schedule. Using observational inquiry and cognitive task analysis, the study deconstructs student workflows into a five-stage decision model, from preparation and discovery through deduction and conflict resolution. The findings translate behavioral breakdowns into eight high-impact design recommendations to streamline information hierarchy, search defaults, and multi-variable schedule planning.

About

I'm Jennifer Anderson, and I specialize in making complex ideas clear. My communication and information design work spans over two decades of interfaces, posters, brand systems, editorial and book design, illustration, and kinetic typography.

I designed game interfaces for Treyarch, a subsidiary of Activision, before going on to earn a Master of Design in Communication Planning and Information Design from Carnegie Mellon University. This built on a foundation in ethics and aesthetics from UCLA, along with my experience as a project manager in cutting-edge interactive media for major studios such as HBO and Warner Brothers. For over 25 years, I have focused on using design to clearly convey ideas to its intended audience.

Alongside communication and service design, I integrate emerging technologies like LLMs and agentic workflows to accelerate research synthesis and ideation. This exploration is always grounded in human judgment and ethics.

I partner with clients on select engagements across brand systems, publication and editorial design, motion graphics, and visual storytelling. If you have work that requires both strategic clarity and seasoned craft, I'd love to hear from you.
